What to Expect on Your First Safari

Your first African safari is likely to be very different from an ordinary holiday. Days often begin early, wildlife sightings are unpredictable and much of the experience involves simply watching nature unfold.

Expect Early Mornings

Many game drives begin shortly after sunrise because animals are often active during the cooler morning hours.

You may need to wake up before sunrise, have a quick breakfast or take breakfast with you before heading into the park.

Expect Some Driving

Kenya’s wildlife areas can be large. Reaching certain destinations and moving between parks can involve several hours on the road.

However, the journey itself can become part of the safari, particularly when travelling through rural areas and changing landscapes.

Wildlife Sightings Are Unpredictable

There is no guarantee that you will see a particular animal. Even experienced guides cannot control where wild animals move.

You may spend time searching for a leopard and then unexpectedly encounter elephants, lions or cheetahs instead.

Expect Dust

Safari roads can be dusty, particularly during dry periods. Sunglasses, a hat and a light scarf can make the experience more comfortable.

Expect Changing Weather

Mornings can be cool while afternoons become warm. A layered clothing system works well because you can remove or add clothing as temperatures change.

Your safari guide is an important part of the experience. Experienced guides understand animal behaviour, local geography and the best places to look for wildlife.

Ask questions. A good safari is not simply about taking photographs; it is an opportunity to understand the ecosystem.

Respect the Animals
